/ QUERY FAN-OUT

What sub-queries does AI actually run behind each prompt?

When a user asks ChatGPT a question, the engine runs a handful of latent searches before composing the answer. Query fan-out reveals those sub-queries for every prompt you track — and shows which of them you already get traffic for in Google.

/ The question

The parent prompt is the iceberg tip. Behind it, AI runs 3-6 sub-queries to triangulate an answer: comparison variants, pricing variants, how-it-works variants, year-anchored variants. If you’re not visible across the fan, you’re not visible in the answer — even if you rank for the parent.

/ How it works

Methodology

  1. 01

    Deterministic inference

For each locked probe query, we expand it into a fan of likely sub-queries using a deterministic heuristic: comparison ("X vs alternatives"), pricing ("X pricing"), how-it-works, review, year-anchored. Fast and cacheable; no LLM call per parent.

  2. 02

    GSC enrichment when connected

With Google Search Console connected, we cross-reference each parent against your last-28-day top queries by content-token overlap. Real GSC matches get promoted to rank 1, the inferred fan moves down. A "GSC" pill marks each enriched row.

  3. 03

    Surface the gap

For each parent + sub-query pair we show whether you’re cited by AI engines and which competitors win when you aren’t. The actionable rows: sub-queries you already rank for in Google but AI skips you on. Those are the easy wins.
